January 22nd – January 23rd “Fine For Planting Any Aboveground Crop Where The Climate Permits. Extra Good For Peppers, Tomatoes. Peas And Vine Crops Will Do Well. Favorable For Onions, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Beets, And Other Root Crops Where Climate Permits.”
Late last summer, when we were scrambling to get a fall garden started, I purchased this wonderful container of 100% Heirloom vegetable, fruit and herb non-GMO, non-hybrid seeds off of Amazon.com. We actually never got any of them planted last year but were able to use them today.
The containers we chose to use were 8 oz. styrofoam cups (45 for $1) from Dollar General. Ethan and I poked holes (with a sharpened pencil) along the lower sides around the cup and bottom of the cups for drainage. This part is a lot of fun for kids to do.
Next, we filled all the cups with Miracle Gro Potting Soil (from Dollar General as well) . I put a large trash bag on the floor under the soil bag so the mess wouldn’t be as big. Expect a mess with children ( hey, I made one too ) but don’t make a fuss over it so it doesn’t spoil the fun they should have. Remember, you will be cleaning up afterwards anyway, so it’s ok if things get messy. It’s worth the enjoyment the children will have. So for now, IGNORE the mess and have a great time with your children!!!
Lastly, we planted the seeds, 2-3 in each cup, burying the seeds the depths required according to seed size and covering them with soil.
Our tote filled with our future plants is sitting under our kitchen table right under our bay windows. I am so excited to be able to watch our little plants grow up. There is something so wonderful and exciting about watching as life forms from the soil. And it was such a great experience to be able to do this educational and fun activity with my 6-year-old son. I look forward to posting pictures as soon as our little plants appear! I know this year that we are going to have a lovely garden! I hope you enjoyed this post as much as we enjoyed planting our seeds today….
